Car Lighting Repair in Birmingham
A headlight out, a DRL strip half-lit or indicators flashing at double speed — we trace lighting faults through bulbs, units, modules and wiring, then repair them.

Vehicle lighting has moved far beyond a bulb and a switch. Modern headlights use LED arrays, control modules, levelling motors and cornering functions, while even humble indicators are monitored electronically for bulb failure. When something stops working, the cause might be the lamp unit, its power supply, an earth, a control module or the wiring between them — and guessing gets expensive quickly with sealed LED units.
Our car lighting repair service tests the lighting circuit end to end. Supply voltage and earth integrity at the lamp connector are checked first, control signals are verified, and only then is the lamp unit itself condemned. Traditional bulb circuits are repaired just as carefully: a holder with heat-damaged contacts will destroy replacement bulbs until the holder or its wiring is renewed.
Lighting work is mobile across Birmingham, handy when a failed headlight makes night driving illegal or an indicator fault needs sorting before a commute from Acocks Green to the city. Faults caused by water-filled lamp units — a familiar sight after Birmingham rain — are assessed for drain blockages and seal failure alongside the electrical repair itself.
What's included in car lighting repair
Headlight fault repair
Halogen, xenon and LED headlight failures investigated through bulbs or igniters, ballasts, fuses, relays, switches and the wiring feeding them.
LED and DRL fault work
Daytime running lights partially lit, flickering or dead checked for unit failure, module output problems and connector corrosion before replacement is advised.
Indicator and hazard faults
Fast-flashing indicators, one side dead or hazards misbehaving traced through bulb monitoring circuits, stalks, relays and body module outputs.
Lighting wiring and earth repair
Chafed looms behind bumpers, corroded earth points and melted connectors renewed — the hidden causes behind repeat bulb failures.
Water ingress investigation
Condensation and water-filled lamps examined for blocked drains and failed seals, with wiring and connectors cleaned or replaced as damage requires.
Rear light cluster repair
Number plate lights, fog lights, reversing lights and brake light circuits repaired, including the shared-earth faults that make clusters light up wrongly.
Why LED lights fail differently
An LED headlight rarely dies all at once without warning. Drivers notice one section of a daytime running light strip glowing dimmer, flickering over bumps, or a delay before one side illuminates. Inside the unit, individual diodes or their driver electronics degrade, and because the unit is sealed, repair options depend on the design — some drivers and boards are replaceable, others mean a complete lamp.
Before accepting that expense, the supply side must be proven healthy. Low voltage from a corroded connector imitates internal failure convincingly, and a module output fault affects a perfect lamp identically. Testing at the connector with the lamp under load is the only honest way to separate a wiring bill from a headlight bill.
Repeat bulb failure means something else is wrong
A headlight bulb should last years, so a car eating bulbs every few months is reporting a fault: overcharging from a tired alternator regulator, a loose connector arcing and spiking, or a bulb holder so heat-damaged that the new bulb's contacts never sit properly. Vibration from a broken lamp mounting accelerates all of it.
The remedy is to fix the environment, not stock up on bulbs. Charging voltage is checked as part of lighting work — see alternator repair for that side — holders and connectors are renewed where heat has marked them, and the lamp is secured so the filament or diode board is no longer being shaken apart.
How car lighting repair works
Tell us which lights misbehave
Which lamp, whether it is dead, dim or intermittent, and whether bumps, rain or indicators change the behaviour.
Test supply, earth and control
Voltage and earth quality measured at the lamp under load, with switches, relays and module outputs verified.
Repair the proven cause
Bulb, holder, connector, wiring, module output or lamp unit addressed — whichever the measurements actually identified.
Check every light, together
Full lighting check afterwards including brake lights with indicators and hazards combined, catching shared-earth oddities before leaving.

Why has my headlight stopped working after changing the bulb?
If a new bulb stays dark, the fault was never the bulb: likely causes are a blown fuse, a failed relay, a melted bulb holder with poor contact, a broken wire, or no output from the lighting module. Testing the connector for power and earth under load identifies which, and the repair then targets that point rather than another bulb.
Can LED headlights and DRLs be repaired?
Sometimes. Where the design allows, separate driver modules, control boards or sections can be renewed, and faults in the supply wiring or connectors are fully repairable. Sealed units with internal diode failure usually require complete lamp replacement. Testing proves whether your fault lives inside the lamp or outside it, so that decision is based on evidence, not assumption.
Why do my indicators flash too fast on one side?
Fast flashing is the car's bulb-failure warning: it has detected reduced load on that side, usually a blown bulb, but a corroded holder, poor earth or wrong-specification LED replacement bulb produces the same signal. Check each lamp on that side first; if all bulbs look intact, the circuit needs testing to find where the load is being lost.
Is it illegal to drive with a headlight out?
Yes — driving with a defective headlight can attract a fixed penalty, and the car would fail its MOT. More importantly, a missing headlight makes the car look like a motorcycle to other drivers at night and halves your own view. Treat it as urgent, especially in winter, and avoid night journeys until repaired.
Why is there water inside my headlight?
Lamp units are vented, and light condensation that clears is normal. Standing water means a failed seal, cracked housing or blocked drain, and it corrodes connectors and electronics inside. The unit needs drying, the entry point found, and damaged wiring assessed. Simply emptying the water without fixing the seal guarantees the problem returns within weeks of wet weather.
My lights flicker when I go over bumps. What is wrong?
Movement-sensitive flickering points to a loose connection: a connector not fully seated, terminals widened by heat, a fatigued wire breaking strand by strand, or a poor earth. The circuit is flex-tested section by section while operating, which makes the readings jump at the guilty point. Such faults worsen with time, so early attention prevents a total failure later.
Can you fix brake lights that stay on all the time?
Yes. Brake lights stuck on usually involve the brake pedal switch — worn, misadjusted or with damaged wiring — although module faults and incorrect bulb fitting occasionally cause it. Left alone it flattens the battery overnight and confuses drivers behind you. The switch and its circuit are tested quickly, and most causes are repaired during the same visit.
Do you repair lighting faults at home in Birmingham?
Yes, lighting testing and repair are fully mobile throughout Birmingham and the West Midlands, operating 24 hours. That matters when a car is not legal or safe to drive at night. Lamp unit replacements depend on parts availability for your model, and if a unit must be sourced, timescales are explained before any work begins.
